Update: Closure of Tyrrelstown Community Centre for works

17 May by Dave Lawrence

26/6/24: Good news—It has just been confirmed that we will be using the Sports Hall in LeCheile Secondary School as our venue for the first half of next season. We’ll have slightly fewer hours, but due to this closure and the rate at which we are expanding, the committee have also been looking for an additional hall. We are very close to having good news on this front. We will keep everyone up to date as soon as we can.

Enjoy the good weather, and we’ll see you practising on the courts.

Go Sonics!!!

We want to be as transparent as possible to keep club members updated with information as we receive it. We have received an email which has some positive news with regards to using a hall locally, however, it’s lacking details, but it is very much a step in the correct direction. We will keep you all updated with details once they have been confirmed.

Go Sonics!!!

…………..

Club Members,

Yesterday afternoon, the committee received notification from the Tyrrelstown Community Centre that the Department of Education has ordered the closure of the centre from July 1st to December 31st, 2024, for emergency and essential works. These works stem from the issues identified during the Western Building Systems controversy in 2018. While details are scarce, here’s what we currently know.

Although the committee had been aware of a potential closure in previous years, it had not materialised until now. The short notice of this closure has taken us by surprise. We spent much of yesterday coordinating efforts to find suitable alternatives for our activities during this period. The current plan, pending confirmation, is to relocate all community centre activities to the sports hall at LeCheile Secondary School. This solution aims to minimise disruption. Due to the club’s expansion, we will still need additional hall hours, and we have been in discussions with other venues.

The committee faces a busy summer and first half of the season. We are committed to minimising the disruption caused by this closure as much as possible, but some interruptions will be inevitable. We ask the Sonics family for their patience and support. Any assistance from parents during this time would be greatly appreciated.

Our most immediate concern is the camp scheduled for July 1st-5th. Fortunately, we have secured an alternative venue in Dublin 15 for the same dates, though it is not ideally located. We are still seeking a closer venue.

We will keep everyone updated as we receive more information. These next few months will be challenging, but we have overcome greater obstacles, such as COVID. With the support of the Sonics family, we will navigate this situation and emerge stronger.

If you have any personal concerns/questions about this disruption or are willing to offer support, you can contact the committee via committee@dublinsonics.ie

Go Sonics!!!
